How To Clean Spray Adhesive Off Stencil

herbertos the paper folder. says:

who says its cheating?
quit making your own rules!
hahaha

its a choice.
thats like saying biking with a helmet.....or not?
either way you'll still get the enjoyment of riding a bike.

maybe thats a bad example.
hahaha.
I use adhesive spray, and sometimes i'll use weights. depends on the stencil.

haha... thanx herbertos...
i do love making my own rules... living in my own little world afterall :)

maybe i just don't get why someone would want to use a stencil and spraypaint if you don't want the stencil spraypaint 'look'...

whats the point in making a stencil piece with spraypaint and adhesive if you can get crispy clean lines using acrilics and a roller... would be a much easier way of doing things.

not nearly as cool though ;)

I am with you i am doom, if you want crisp lines don't use spray paint, the whole point of spray paint is to give it a bit more of a raw feel, and clean lines don't cut it.

Plus, spray adhesive destroys stencils, well from my experience anyways.

Fatcaps : Yes.
Duct tape: Yes.
Adhesive: No.

Just my two cents.

spray adhesive only works with certain stencils you can break the stencil using spray adhesive if there are very fine bits to it.
But I would use it for some things so whatever suits.

I've had mixed results with adhesive. Sometimes it will leave behind a residue that just mucks everything up. But I've also had it make all the difference in some highly detailed stencils. I've fooled around with a few different brands and types of adhesive. I've become a fan of some stuff that krylon makes called easy tack. its made for stencils and is made to be sticky but not a permanent bond. I'd be interested to hear what other people have had success with.

The Bleeding Edge says:

NOT, slows you down, its messy and only works well with thinner materials on smooth surfaces.

Get stiffer and more durable stencil material and you won't need adhesive. Anyways, that shit costs like the same price as 5 tins of spray, if you use adhesive spray you are just being mugged off.

sparcs.au says:

I will use it especially for stencils on T-shirts using bleach... and for some of the floppy stencils.

Oh and on irregular media...cans, hats, saws,....??

I use a 3M one, sticks like a bastard, so I only use a little.

i only use adhesive because i have it for art projects. i dont spray a load of it on. i usually do one light spray about 8 inches away or so. that way it covers a broad area and doesnt build up. i wouldnt suggest repeatedly spraying it and slapping it on because sometimes residue messes up your art.

I can usually get pretty crisp lines using fishing weights. For really fine details I use a bottle rocket stick like a wand.

*eddie says:

Use textile adhesive that screen printers use for shirts. Less residue lighter tack super 77 is overkill and sometimes hard to remove.

thundering writer [dihapus] bilang:

we use EASY TACK but just recently found ELMER'S CRAFT BOND which is less expensive

our work is on TSHIRTS so i highly recommend ELMER'S since it leaves no residue

spray adhesive? never!! too much mess, residue and why???
check my work and see how the pros do it!

Eneen says:

no spray adhesive! i somehow get better results without adhesive. although i dont think its cheating..

idky says:

lol how the pros do it? crisp clean lines with spray paint?... so if you dont want crisp lines why waste the time cutting a stencil... i haven't had a "mess" using spray adhesive.i have used several different adhesives. nor have i had any residue. If i were to use a stiffer material like x ray film then its A) harder to cut stencil and B) kills the exacto blade and still might need a bit of tack on the back... i dont care if you dont but to say its cheating is stupid

BEYONET says:

are we talking walls or canvas and shirts?

cause some of my pack have used adhesives before, with mixed results really. they say that it allows for detail without spending more time on scene. plus if you're flying solo, it helps you out with bigger stencils.

over all it really doesn't matter a whole lot, we are switching over to wheat paste because of the time and detail dilemma. fly in 2 man groups and hit more than one in a night. we still use a stencil to make the print though.

but cheating? psh, if you need some adhesive cause you had to climb up, and the cops have driven by... no its not cheating

*one thing though, try out the adhesive with your paint to see if it will mix weird before you hit the street.

orchid_falls says:

I know this is wicked old, but I thought I'd say something. I don't use adhesive on the streets, but stenciling things at home (Gameboys, since I do that on commission for people :D), I think adhesive is great.

But as far as on the street goes, I don't think it's cheating. I think it's cheating if you can't get crisp lines otherwise, but if you're doing a large stencil on your own, it can be hella handy :D
